Description
What our Similar and Congruent Figures lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Similar and Congruent Figures introduces students to similar and congruent figures, and each concept is defined using illustrations and mathematical equations. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to determine if two shapes are similar or congruent based on an image as well as measurements. This lesson is for students in 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.
Classroom Procedure
Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.
Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. For an additional activity, you can have your students draw four shapes, switch with a partner, and then practice by making both similar and congruent figures from their paper.
Teacher Notes
The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.
SIMILAR AND CONGRUENT FIGURES LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES
Similar Figures
The Similar and Congruent Figures lesson plan includes two content pages. When working with shapes, the term similar means the same shape. Two figures that are similar are the same shape. Figures that are the same shape but are rotated, different colors, or different sizes are still similar.
Similar shapes have an equal ratio of the lengths of their corresponding sides. To figure out if two shapes are similar, you compare the corresponding sides. If they have an equal ratio, the shapes are similar!
The lesson shows an example of two triangles, including their side and angle measurements. The triangles are different sizes, but the ratios of their corresponding sides are equal, so they’re similar. The lesson also shows an example of two triangles that are not similar. The ratios of their corresponding sides are not equal.
Congruent Figures
The term congruent means that two shapes are both the same shape and the same size. Shapes that are the same shape and size but are rotated or different colors are still congruent. The lesson shows a few visual examples of both congruent and non-congruent shapes.
Two similar shapes have equal lengths of their corresponding sides. To figure out if two shapes are congruent, you compare the corresponding sides and angles. If both the sides and angles are the same, the shapes are congruent.
The lesson shows an example of two trapezoids, including the measurements of their sides. These trapezoids are congruent because each side of one is the equal to the corresponding side of the other. Two circles are congruent if they have the same radius. The lesson closes with an example of two congruent circles.
SIMILAR AND CONGRUENT FIGURES LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS
The Similar and Congruent Figures lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.
PHOTO POSTER ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will create a photo poster of similar and congruent shapes. Each student or group of students will create a poster with photos of various shapes. Next, they will use a permanent marker to outline the shape, making sure to measure and label the sides of polygons and the radius of all circles. Students can either measure using the photograph or the object in real life.
SOLVING PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to solve problems that deal with similar and congruent figures.
SIMILAR AND CONGRUENT FIGURES HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
Like the practice worksheet, the homework assignment asks students to solve problems that deal with similar and congruent figures.
QUIZ
This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will define similar figures and congruent figures.
Worksheet Answer Keys
This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet, the homework assignment, and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
