In our Rounding Whole Numbers lesson plan, students learn about how you round whole numbers. Students complete practice problems in which they must round whole numbers in order to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson material.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to the lesson activity is to use the numbers your students cut apart to practice rounding by announcing the numbers students “write out” using the number slips, and then “write out” the rounded number you choose.

Description

What our Rounding Whole Numbers lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Rounding Whole Numbers prepares students to round whole numbers to any place and use rounding for word problems. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to round whole numbers to any place and use rounding for word problems. This lesson is for students in 3rd grade and 4th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to the lesson activity is to use the numbers your students cut apart to practice rounding by announcing the numbers students “write out” using the number slips, and then “write out” the rounded number you choose.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ROUNDING WHOLE NUMBERS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Rounding Whole Numbers

The Rounding Whole Numbers lesson plan includes two content pages. If your friend scores 497 or 509 on a video game, you probably automatically round those scores to 500, since 500 is a more convenient number to use.

Rounding is when you change the exact value of a number to a number that is more convenient or easier to use. When you round, you can either increase or decrease the value of a number. For example, if a room has 37 people in it, you might say there are about 40 people in the room. You rounded up and increased the number’s value. On the other hand, if a room has 105 people in it and you say there are 100, you rounded down and decreased the number’s value.

Rounding is easy! All you need to know is the place value of the digits in the number you want to round. The lesson includes a helpful chart that reviews the place value of each digit.

Examples: Rounding to the Nearest Thousand

When rounding whole numbers, the first step is to identify the place value to be rounded. Let’s take a look at a few examples of rounding to the nearest thousand. First, let’s round 12,367. Since you’re rounding to the nearest thousand, take a look at the number to the right of the thousands place. If it’s 5 or above, you increase the number in the thousands place by 1. If it’s 4 or lower, it stays the same. In this example, the number to the right of the thousands place is a 3, so the number in the thousands place stays the same and all of the digits to the right of the thousands place change to zeros. 12,367 rounded to the nearest thousand is 12,000.

Let’s look at another example and round 12,667 to the nearest thousand. You use the same method as the first example. The number to the right of the thousands place is a 6, so you increase the number in the thousands place by 1 and change all of the digits to the right of it to zeros. 12,667 rounded to the nearest thousand is 13,000.

More Examples

Next, the lesson lists three easy steps for rounding 25,189 to the nearest ten-thousands place. First, identify the ten-thousands place (2) and underline it. Second, look at the place value to the right (8) and circle it. Third, ask yourself if the circled number (8) is five or above. In this example, it is, so you add one to the digit in the ten-thousands place. Therefore, 25,189 rounded to the nearest ten-thousand is 30,000.

You can round any number, no matter how small or large it is. The lesson closes with a few more examples. To become an expert at rounding, all you need is a little practice!

ROUNDING WHOLE NUMBERS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Rounding Whole Numbers lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

CHART ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will work with a partner to complete the activity worksheet. Each pair will first cut out the numbers on the worksheet and mix them up. Next, they will create random numbers using the cut out digits and use the chart printed on the worksheet to round each random number. Once they’ve completed the chart, they will swap it with another pair of students and check each other’s work.

NUMBER QUESTIONS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will answer questions about the numbers listed and how to round them to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and more.

ROUNDING WHOLE NUMBERS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment asks students to round each number listed to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and ten thousand. They will also fill in the blanks in a rhyme that will help them round.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
