What our Rounding Decimals and Money lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Rounding Decimals and Money provides ample practice for students to solidify rounding decimals and money to tenths, hundredths, dollars, and cents. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to round decimals and money to tenths, hundredths, dollars, and cents. This lesson is for students in 4th grade and 5th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to use local menus for students to practice rounding by having your students order something to eat, round the numbers, and then find the total cost. You can also have your students create a new menu for a restaurant they would own, then exchange with other students to round the prices. Finally, you could print a price list of products from a website and have your students round the prices of each item.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

ROUNDING DECIMALS AND MONEY LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Rounding Decimals and Money

The Rounding Decimals and Money lesson plan includes two content pages. If you see a shirt or game you would like to have that costs $12.75, you would probably tell your parents that it costs about $13.00. This is called rounding the price to the nearest dollar. Rounding money is very similar to rounding decimals or whole numbers.

When you round, you change the exact value of a number to a number that is more convenient or easier to work with. Rounding a number can either increase or decrease that number’s value. For example, if a price is $24.95 and you round it to $25.00, you rounded up, which increased the value. If a bag of potato chips weighs 1.2 ounces, you might round it down to say it’s about 1 ounce, which decreased the number’s value.

Before you can start rounding, you need to understand the place value of each digit on both sides of the decimal point. The lesson includes a helpful diagram using the price $258.32. When talking about money, the dollars are on the left side of the decimal point and the cents are on the right side. For $258.32, the first 2 is in the hundreds place, the 5 is in the tens place, the 8 is in the ones place, the 3 is in the tenths place, and the second 2 is in the hundredths place.

Rounding decimals is just as easy as rounding whole numbers. First, you identify the place value of the digit you are rounding and look at the number on its right. If the number on its right is 5 or above, round up. If it’s 4 or below, round down! A helpful way to remember this is to say: 5 or above, give it a shove; 4 or below, keep it low.

To round decimals and money, round to the nearest tenth or hundredth (or to the nearest dollar or cent). Remember that you don’t need extras zeros at the end of a decimal.

Examples

Let’s look at an example. Let’s round 25.34 to the nearest tenths place. First, identify the tenths place and underline it. In this example, the 3 is in the tenths place. Next, look at the place value to the right and circle it. In this example, the place value to the right has a 4 in it. Finally, ask yourself if that number (4) is 5 or above. It’s not, so you do not need to change the digit in the tenths place. Instead, change the digit to the right into a zero. Your final answer is 25.30.

Let’s look at another example. Let’s round $182.74 to the nearest dollar. First, identify the dollar’s place and underline it. In this example, the 2 is in the dollars place (the ones place). Next, look at the place value to the right and circle it. In this example, the place value to the right has a 7 in it. Finally, ask yourself if that number (7) is 5 or above. It is, so you need to add one to the digit in the dollars place and change all the digits to the right into zeroes. Your final answer is $183.00.

Conclusion

When rounding, always remember the helpful rhyme “You look to the right, if it is five or above, give it a shove (add one). You look to the right, if it’s four or below, you keep it low (no change).”

You can round any number or amount of money, no matter how large or small. The lesson closes with some final examples. Practice rounding and you’ll be an expert in no time!
