Lesson Objectives and Overview: Integers: Opposite Signs of Numbers teaches students about integers and how they can have opposite signs. This is an important concept for students to understand, as it will help them with future math concepts. At the end of this lesson, students will be able to recognize and demonstrate that opposite signs of numbers are found on the opposite sides of zero and can explain opposites of opposites. This lesson is for students in 6th grade.

Options for Lesson
Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to the lesson activity is to have your students use manipulatives to show that the house and park are equal distance to the diner. You could also use an additional scenario for the activity question. For an additional activity, you could conduct a speed game of an “Opposite Bee” where student teams compete to identify opposites or opposites of opposites of a variety of numbers. Finally, you could have your students create word problems using opposites of numbers to share with a partner and for solving.

Opposite Signs of Numbers
The Integers: Opposite Signs of Numbers lesson plan includes two content pages. Rational numbers include all integers, fractions, repeating decimals, and terminating decimals. They can be positive or negative and include zero. Any number that you can write as a fraction can also be defined as a rational number.
You can also show all rational numbers on a number line. The lesson includes an example number line that shows different rational numbers with intervals of one-half.
Opposite numbers are the same distance from zero in opposite directions. One is always positive and the other is always negative. For example, the opposite of 1/2 is -1/2 (also written as -0.5) because they’re the same distance from zero on a number line. The opposite of -1.5 is 1 4/8 (also written as 1 1/2 or 1.5). Zero is a special case, because zero is its own opposite! There’s no distance between zero and itself on a number line.
Some other examples of opposite numbers include -3.5 and 3.5, 2/7 and -2/7, 109 and -109, and -0.777 and 0.777. Each pair is the same distance from zero on a number line.
Opposite of the Opposite
Did you know that the opposite of the opposite of something is the same as the original? For example, the opposite of up is down, but the opposite of the opposite of up is up! This is the same with numbers. The opposite of the opposite of the number 7, for example, is 7. And the opposite of the opposite of the number -5 is -5!
The opposite of a positive number is always negative and the opposite of a negative number is always positive. However, the opposite of an opposite negative number is negative, the opposite of an opposite positive number is positive, and zero (0) is its own opposite.

DRAW A PICTURE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET
For the activity worksheet, students will read a word problem and answer questions about it. They will also draw a picture to help explain their responses to the questions.
COMPLETE THE CHART PRACTICE WORKSHEET
The practice worksheet asks students to complete a chart that shows people and their scores in a game. They have to fill in the opposite of each score and the opposite of opposite of each score. Students will also plot the opposites of given numbers on number lines.

For the homework assignment, students will first read and write the number that represents each description. Next, they will write the opposite of each of their answers to the first part of the worksheet. Third, they will write the opposite of the opposite of each of their answers to the first part of the worksheet. Finally, they will answer a few questions about the lesson material.
