Description

Our Words and Phrases for Effect lesson plan teaches students about using tone and emotions in their writing along with how to recognize these things in other people’s writing. During this lesson, students are asked to choose an emotion or feeling from a list and then practice reading specific sentences with those emotions in order to practice expressing each emotion while reading aloud. Students are also asked to read a story and then write a continuation of that story using feeling and emotion words, demonstrating their ability to convey emotions in their writing.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify an author’s tone and the words or phrases expressing feelings and emotions, understand how authors use language to precisely communicate what the author is trying to convey, and understand that tone is the combination of voice inflection and word choice to communicate accurately without misunderstanding by the listener.
