Evidence for Support

Evidence for Support explains how to find and use evidence to support research or reflection essays or analyses. Students will learn five steps or strategies to use to find evidence.

There are several suggestions listed in the “Options for Lesson” section on the classroom procedure page that you can use with your class. One option is to use an additional news article or book for the activity. You could also have students create a poster that displays the five steps for finding evidence for support. Another suggestion is to have students read some kind of literary selection and comes up with questions for other students to respond to.

What our Evidence for Support lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Evidence for Support teaches students how to draw evidence from literary or informational texts. Students will learn how to identify these pieces of information and use them to support their analysis. They will be able to use five steps to find supporting evidence.

The lesson contains three pages of content. The lesson first presents a scenario that will helps students recognize how they use evidence to form a conclusion about something. Students will learn how to define evidence and how to identify it in texts. For instance, they can read about someone yelling at their friends and slamming their fists. While the author may not say the character is angry, they can use the evidence of yelling and slamming to infer that the person is indeed angry.

The lesson lists five strategies and steps that will help students figure out how to draw evidence for support. They will use these steps in the worksheets.

ACTIVITY

Students will work with a partner for the activity. However, you can have them work by themselves or in small groups if you prefer. Students will read an informative text from a USA Today article. They will write a short essay that includes an intro, body, and conclusion.

The essays must include evidence that supports their analysis. They will follow the five steps from the lesson. They can use additional paper if they need to. There are several questions after the text that they will answer before they begin the rough draft for their essays.

PRACTICE

The practice worksheet divides into two sections. The first section relates to the five steps for finding evidence. Students must first order the five steps. Then they will read five statements that describe the steps. They will match the steps to the correct statement. The second section requires students to compare two passages and write an essay based on the question below the texts. They will have to use a separate sheet of paper to write their essay.

HOMEWORK

For the homework assignment, students will read a fable. Then they will answer four questions that relate to the passage.
