Our Direct Speech Punctuation lesson plan teaches students how to properly use commas and quotation marks when writing direct speech or quotations. During this lesson, students are asked to work collaboratively with a group to complete an activity in which two students have a conversation while another pair of students listen and write down as much of the conversation as they can; they then correctly rewrite the direct speech without using the word “said” and with the correct direct speech punctuation. Students are also asked to correctly add commas and quotation marks to sentences where needed, demonstrating their understanding of proper punctuation.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use commas and quotation marks to mark direct speech and quotations from a text.
