Our Dictionaries to Find Precise Meanings lesson plan teaches students strategies for using a dictionary. During this lesson, students are asked to complete an activity with a partner in which they draw words from a hat and then race their partner to find that word in the dictionary, demonstrating their understanding of the way words are listed in the dictionary. Students are also asked to read sentences, find the bolded words in the dictionary, and then write the definition under the sentence.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to locate words in dictionaries and glossaries in both print and digital, alphabetize words and find word definitions using guide words and other parts of the dictionary or glossary, and determine the best definition of a word to use when more than one definition is present.
