Description

Our Clarify the Meaning lesson plan teaches students how to determine the meaning of words and phrases. During this lesson, students are asked to work with a partner to complete an activity in which they invent 3 new words with their own spelling and pronunciation, creating dictionary entries for each; the dictionary entries must include the word’s pronunciation, the word’s definitions (must be at least two), part or parts of speech, at least two sentences showing how it is correctly used, and three or more synonyms for each definition. Students are also asked to read various scenarios and tell whether a dictionary, thesaurus, or glossary would be used.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to consult reference materials both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech.
