Our Acquire/Use Accurate Words and Phrases lesson plan teaches students strategies for using words and phrases that are both accurate and effective in their writing. During this lesson, students are asked to work collaboratively with a partner to write two paragraphs about a given pair of related topics (i.e., summer and winter or music and sports), using as many unique words as possible; they then list the words according to category (everyday words, general academic words, and topic-specific words). Students are also asked to identify whether each word in a given list is an Every-Day, General Academic, or Subject-Specific word.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
