Description
What our Weather: Sunny lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Weather: Sunny teaches young learners about the weather when the sun is bright. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize sunny weather and how the sun makes shadows. This lesson is for students in preschool.
CUP SUNS ACTIVITY
For the activity, students will make suns out of Styrofoam or paper cups. Before the lesson, prepare the Styrofoam cups by cutting slits in the side of the cups, stopping about 1 inch from the bottom. Stand the cups on a baking sheet and place them in an oven at 270 degrees for about 15 seconds. Watch them carefully as the slits will slowly curl down to form sun rays. Remove the cups and let them cool.
Alternatively, you can use sturdy paper cups instead of Styrofoam cups. Follow the same steps, but flatten the cups with your hand without cooking them.
Options and Extensions
Optionally, you could give students sunglasses and let them complete their activities while wearing them. As an extension for the lesson, read The Sun is My Favorite Star by Frank Asch and Guess Whose Shadow by Stephen R. Swinburn.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
Our preschool lessons include additional resources that you can use throughout the lesson. They are provided to give you as much content as possible to complete the lesson without their having to find sources on their own. For instance, if the lesson requires you to show students pictures, you can use the ones in the additional resources.
Preschool Philosophy
Our preschool curriculum is thoughtfully designed by professional teachers to nurture curiosity, build foundational skills, and prepare young learners for kindergarten and beyond. Each preschool lesson plan offers age-appropriate activities to promote early literacy, math readiness, creativity, and social-emotional growth.
At the preschool level, children are developing rapidly—socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. The goal of our lesson plans for preschool is to provide structured yet engaging learning experiences that spark imagination, encourage problem-solving, and foster a lifelong love of learning.
