What our Numbers: Ten lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Numbers: Ten teaches young learners about the number ten. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the number ten and demonstrate understanding of the concept of “ten” by counting ten objects. This lesson is for students in preschool.

TEN APPLES ACTIVITY

For this activity, students will make apples for their last page of the numbers book. Say, “We are going to make a numbers book. Our last page will feature ten apples. We need to stamp our paper ten times to make ten apples.” Demonstrate how to gently stamp the paper with the dot markers. Pass out dot markers and paper, and help students stamp their paper ten times. Count aloud as each child stamps ten times. Pass out the markers or foam green triangles and add the leaf and stem to each apple. Once the apples are complete, read the caption at the bottom of the page with the students. “10 – Ten apples fall to the ground.” Save the page to create a number book.

At the end of this activity, students will have created the tenth page in their numbers book. By the end of the unit, students will have a page for each of the numbers 1 through 10. Keep all of the activities from all the “Numbers” lessons and staple them together. Add the cover page from the Additional Resources in the Numbers: One lesson plan. Once completed, read the book with your students and send them home for families to enjoy.

Optional: As the final page of the number’s book, print off the last page from Additional Resources with the caption: “Counting is so fun, you see. Come and count again with me.” And have the student draw a picture of themselves. Attach it to the end of the book.

Options and Extensions

There are a couple of additional options you could add to the lesson. Create a 10 number bracelet. Using a pipe cleaner, have students add ten pony beads. Label the bracelet with the number ten using tape and a marker. Let students wear their number bracelet. Using the number 10 sheet included in Additional Resources, have students trace the number with their finger, then a pencil or crayon if desired. Students can then add ten stickers or use dot markers to complete the ten-frame.

Read the featured book Ten Apples Up on Top! by Dr. Seuss. As an extension to the lesson, read Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews, Ten Little Rubber Ducks by Eric Carle, Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins, and Ten on a Twig by Lo Cole.
