What our Numbers: Six lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Numbers: Six teaches young learners about the number six. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the number six and demonstrate understanding of the concept of “six” by counting six objects. This lesson is for students in preschool.

SIX DUCKS ACTIVITY

For the activity, students will create feather ducks for their numbers book. Prepare for the activity by cutting out six yellow construction paper circles approximately 2 inches in diameter, or use large yellow circle stickers. Put a small pile of yellow circles and a pile of feathers on the table. Say, “We are going to make a numbers book. Our sixth page will have six ducks. We need six circles and six feathers to make the duck’s body. Can you count out six circles and six feathers?” Hold up six yellow circles and six feathers as a model for students to find. When students have picked their materials out, count them together as a class.

Demonstrate how to glue one small feather to the page and then a yellow circle over the bottom of the feather to create a duck. Add an orange foam square or triangle for the beak. Use googly eyes or a marker for the eyes. Pass out the remaining supplies and help students as needed to create six ducks. Once the ducks are complete, read the caption at the bottom of the page with the students. “6 – Six ducks waddle away.” Save the page to create a number book.

At the end of this activity, students will have created the sixth page in their numbers book. By the end of the unit, students will have a page for each of the numbers 1 through 10. Keep all of the activities from all the “Numbers” lessons and staple them together. Add the cover page from the Additional Resources in the Numbers: One lesson plan. Once completed, read the book with your students and send them home for families to enjoy.

Options and Extensions

There are a couple of additional options you could add to the lesson. Create a 6 number bracelet. Using a pipe cleaner, have students add six pony beads. Label the bracelet with the number six using tape and a marker. Let students wear their number bracelet. Using the number 6 sheet included in Additional Resources, have students trace the number with their finger, then a pencil or crayon if desired. Students can then add six stickers or use dot markers to complete the ten-frame.

Read the featured book Six Little Ducks illustrated by Dorothy Stott. As an extension to the lesson, read Six Dinner Sid by Inga Moore and sing the song “Six Little Ducks.”
