What our Numbers: One lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Numbers: One teaches young learners about the number one. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the number one and demonstrate understanding of the concept of “one” by counting one object. This lesson is for students in preschool.

ONE ELEPHANT ACTIVITY

For the activity, students will create and decorate an elephant using the materials you provide. Put a small pile of gray circles on the table, a small pile of cupcake liners in different colors, a small pile of the construction paper trunks, and glue sticks. Hold up one gray circle as a model for students to find. When students have picked out one gray circle, count it together as a class. Repeat with the cupcake liners, trunks, and glue sticks until the students have counted one of each supply. Pass out safety scissors. Have the students cut their cupcake liners in half.

Demonstrate how to glue the gray circle to the number one book page. Glue each ½ cupcake liner to either side of the gray circle to make ears, and attach the trunk in front to make an elephant. Help students as needed. Pass out googly eyes and markers for students to add details on their elephant. Students can create a background or a body for the elephant if desired. Once the elephant is complete, read the caption at the bottom of the page with the students. “1 – One elephant big and gray.”

At the end of this activity, students will have created the first page in their numbers book. By the end of the unit, students will have a page for each of the numbers 1 through 10. Keep all of the activities from all the “Numbers” lessons and staple them together. Add the cover page from Additional Resources. Once completed, read the book with your students and send them home for families to enjoy.

Options and Extensions

There are a couple of additional options you could add to the lesson. Create a 1 number bracelet. Using a pipe cleaner, have students add one pony bead. Label the bracelet with the number one using tape and a marker. Let students wear their number bracelet. Using the number 1 paper included in Additional Resources, have students trace the number with their finger, then a pencil or crayon if desired. Students can then add one sticker or use dot markers to complete the ten-frame.
