What our Numbers: Four lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Numbers: Four teaches young learners about the number four. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the number four and demonstrate understanding of the concept of “four” by counting four objects. This lesson is for students in preschool.

FOUR BUTTONS ACTIVITY

Put a small pile of buttons on the table. Say, “We are going to make a numbers book. Our fourth page will feature buttons! You will need four buttons. Can you count out four buttons?” Hold up four buttons as a model for students to find. When students have picked out four buttons, count them together as a class. Pass out the number 4 paper, glue, markers, or crayons. Demonstrate how to use the right amount of glue to attach each button to the shirt. Have students glue 4 buttons to the shirt and color it with crayons or markers. Once the shirts are complete, read the caption at the bottom of the page with the students. “4: Four buttons, round as a ball.” Save the page to create a number book.

At the end of this activity, students will have created the fourth page in their numbers book. By the end of the unit, students will have a page for each of the numbers 1 through 10. Keep all of the activities from all the “Numbers” lessons and staple them together. Add the cover page from the Additional Resources in the Numbers: One lesson plan. Once completed, read the book with your students and send them home for families to enjoy.

Options and Extensions

There are a couple of additional options you could add to the lesson. Create a 4 number bracelet. Using a pipe cleaner, have students add four pony beads. Label the bracelet with the number four using tape and a marker. Let students wear their number bracelet. Using the number 4 sheet included in Additional Resources, have students trace the number with their finger, then a pencil or crayon if desired. Students can then add four stickers or use dot markers to complete the ten-frame.
