What our Numbers: Five lesson plan includes
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Numbers: Five teaches young learners about the number five. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the number five and demonstrate understanding of the concept of “five” by counting five objects. This lesson is for students in preschool.
FIVE FROGS ACTIVITY
For the activity, students will add to their numbers book with a page with five frogs. Say, “We are going to make a numbers book. Our fifth page will have five frogs. We are going to stamp our paper five times with green paint to make five frogs.” Demonstrate how to dip your round sponge paintbrush in the green paint and stamp softly on the paper. Glue googly eyes or use Q-tips to add two black or green frog eyes on top of the circle.
Pass number 5 paper, sponge paint brushes, green paint, and Q-tips to students, and help students stamp the paper five times and add eyes as needed. Once the paper is dry, students can use a marker to add additional details, like a smile or legs, if desired. Once the frogs are complete, read the caption at the bottom of the page with the students. “5 – Five frogs, hopping all day.” Save the page to create a number book.
At the end of this activity, students will have created the fifth page in their numbers book. By the end of the unit, students will have a page for each of the numbers 1 through 10. Keep all of the activities from all the “Numbers” lessons and staple them together. Add the cover page from the Additional Resources in the Numbers: One lesson plan. Once completed, read the book with your students and send them home for families to enjoy.
Options and Extensions
There are a couple of additional options you could add to the lesson. Create a 5 number bracelet. Using a pipe cleaner, have students add five pony beads. Label the bracelet with the number five using tape and a marker. Let students wear their number bracelet. Using the number 5 sheet included in Additional Resources, have students trace the number with their finger, then a pencil or crayon if desired. Students can then add five stickers or use dot markers to complete the ten-frame. Sing a song with five animals. Ideas include:

○ “Five Little Ducks Went Out to Play”
○ “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed”
Read the featured book 5 Green Speckled Frogs by Constanza Basaluzzo. As an extension to the lesson, read 5 Wild Numbers illustrated by Bella Gomez, 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow, and Bear Counts by Karma Wilson.
