Description

What our Fraction Word Problems lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Fraction Word Problems reminds students they will use both fractions and the skills they need to solve word problems in real life. The steps for solving word problems and basic steps for working with fractions are also reviewed as part of the lesson. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to solve real-world problems involving the four basic operations with fractions. This lesson is for students in 5th grade and 6th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to the lesson activity is to have your students use a computer to create their fraction problems in the classroom so that they can research an occupation as well as decorate their cards. You can also have your students practice word problems on a computer using an app or a game. Finally, you can make a booklet of work problems for your students to practice with over the break of the questions made by their classmates.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

FRACTION WORD PROBLEMS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Fraction Word Problems

The Fraction Word Problems lesson plan includes two content pages. Word problems ask you to think about how math can be used in real-life scenarios. There are three steps that you can follow to solve fraction word problems.

Step 1 is to highlight all of the important information, including the amounts provided and the end goal. Step 2 is to determine which operation you will need to use: addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Finally, step 3 is to solve!

The lesson includes four helpful examples that students can read through that illustrate all three steps. The problem in the first example is as follows: A patient is given 2 1/2 teaspoons of medicine in the morning and 1 2/3 teaspoons at night. How many teaspoons total does the patient receive each day?

For the first step, we would highlight “2 1/2 teaspoons”, “1 2/3 teaspoons”, and “How many teaspoons?” because this is the important information in the problem. For the second step, we can figure out that we need to use addition because the problem asks for the total. Finally, for the third step, we solve!

Students can follow these three steps to solve word problems containing fractions. The more they practice, the easier it will get!

FRACTION WORD PROBLEMS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Fraction Word Problems lesson plan includes four worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, a homework assignment, and a quiz. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

INDEX CARDS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity worksheet, students will pick an occupation that they find interesting. They will then create four word problems based on that occupation, using one operation per problem (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). They’ll write their problems on large index cards with the solutions on the back side of each card.

FRACTION WORD PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to solve eight fraction word problems.

CREATE YOUR OWN HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will write their own fraction word problems and show the solution, using the operation listed in each box.

QUIZ

This lesson also includes a quiz that you can use to test students’ understanding of the lesson material. For the quiz, students will solve four word problems. For each, they will highlight, find the operation, and solve.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the quiz. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
